An entire weekend of Bulgarian dance taught by the fabulous Bulgarian dance teacher Yuliyan Yordanov. Yuli was in Seattle a year ago, and all who attended enjoyed his teaching, the dances he chose and his wonderful style of dancing. He is also extremely friendly and encouraging so creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the first step.  Balkan Cabaret fell in love with Yuli when they had the pleasure of working with him at the Door County Festival in Wisconsin.

A native of Doyrentsi, a village in the Lovech region of north central Bulgaria, Yuliyan Yordanov was raised by his grandparents and learned dancing at a young age.  A graduate of the acclaimed Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, he worked professionally as a dance director, choreographer and Bulgarian folk dance instructor beginning in 1993.  He and his students participated in many concerts, celebrations and international festivals throughout Bulgaria and Europe.  In May 1995 they were selected to appear on Channel One of Bulgarian National Television.  In 1997 Yuli was honored with an invitation to attend the traditional annual party for teachers of folklore and culture hosted by the President of Bulgaria.  From a professional teacher to the life of the party, you will love working with Yuli!

- За първи път – представление на Български Детски Хор – Елате да чуете любимите си детски песнички.
- Конкурс за детска рисунка - Ще има 3 възрастови групи за малки, средни и големи деца. Само донесете готовите рисунки.
- Събиране на средства за фондация „Българско Дете” (www.bulgarianchild.org). Ще има томбола в подкрепа на тази чудесна non-profit 501c3 организация, която осигурява, обувки, дрехи, помощ с поддържане на сградите, медицински грижи и “life –skills” обучение деца-сираци в над 40 дома в България.
    - За предпочитане е даренията да са с чек, но ще се приемат дарения и в брой. Кредитни карти не се приемат.
    - Наградите за томболата включват gift certificate от Argosy Cruises на стойност $216.00, gift certificate за масаж и други приятни изненади.

- За първи път на този „Златен Орфей” ще има и награди за най-скородошлия и най-отдавна-пристииналия-в Сиатъл Българин, присъстващ на празненството.

Things to look forward to at this year’s Zlaten Orfey:
- Performances by Radost and Dunava, two amazing local ensembles, which keep the Bulgarian and Balkan folklore traditions of song and dance alive in the Northwest.
- Children’s choir performance by local Bulgarian kids – First time appearance – Not to be missed!  Come and hear your favorite childhood songs.
- There will be a competition for children’s drawings for three age groups, little kids, big kids and those in the middle – just bring your child’s picture/s.
- Fundraiser to benefit “Bulgarian Child” – We will have a fundraising raffle to benefit this wonderful non-profit 501c3 charity that provides shoes, clothes, help with the upkeep of buildings, medical care and life skills training to orphans in Bulgaria living in over 40 orphanages.
    - Donations made by check are preferable, but we will also accept cash at the event. Credit cards cannot be accepted.
    - The prizes for the raffle include a gift certificate for Argosy Cruises in the amount of $216.00, a massage certificate, and other good stuff.

-There will be prizes for the oldest and newest member of the Bulgarian community present at the “Zlaten Orfey”.

Iliana will teach Bulgarian dances during 1 session on Friday night and 3 sessions on Saturday. There will be an evening party with live music provided by accordion player Vladimir Mollov on Saturday night. Vlado will be accompanied by David Bilides on the tupan.

Iliana has taught at several Balkan camps in the US and elsewhere and toured as the lead dancer and singer with Ensemble Ratchenitza of Plovdiv. She has been the Dance Coordinator for the annual Folk Seminar held at the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv. Those who have attended her teaching sessions can attest to the enthusiasm, high energy, and professionalism she brings to the dance floor. She and her dances were warmly received when she taught here in 2000 and 2001 and we eagerly welcome her back to Seattle after much too long an absence.

Vlado is a wonderful young musician who has won numerous awards in Bulgaria and elsewhere for his accordion playing. During 2002 he joined the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, and for the four years when he was a student in the university he performed over three hundred and fifty shows with the ensemble. He also arranged music for some of the dances and as instrumental numbers on the shows and performed a solo piece on every show. Vlado will be the co-repetitor (accompanist) for Iliana during her Sat. workshops. This is a special opportunity for those who have never experienced dance teaching with live music to do so.

 ***We are very excited that Ivan and Entcho have agreed to join us for the second half of the Sat. night party. They are world famous Bulgarian musicians now living and performing in New York City. Currently they are on a tour of the U.S. and just happen to be in Seattle on Jan. 31.***

One of Bulgaria's premier Bitov wedding bands has reunited after 14 years, recording a CD of traditional Bulgarian dance music and planning a U.S. "reunion tour" scheduled for Fall 2008. This multi-talented group of six musicians from Thrace, in southern Bulgaria, played together for nearly 20 years until two key members emigrated to the U.S. in 1995, after the collapse of the various Communist regimes in Eastern Europe. In late 2007, the two émigrés returned to Bulgaria to record Kabile Reunion with their former band members. The debut CD contains 11 of the most popular numbers from their years as a group and includes both vocal and instrumental versions of native Bulgarian songs. Kabile was formed in 1978 and became one of the most popular bands in Thrace. Based in the city of Yambol, the group took its name from the village of Kabile, where they performed one of their earliest gigs. The group specialized in performing native music on traditional village instruments. During its heyday, the band played almost every weekend at weddings, baptisms and cultural festivals in Thrace. The members of the band are Dzhenko Andreev (gaida), Ivan Handzhiev (vocals, accordion), Angel Krastev (tapan), Nikolay Doktorov (kaval), and Donka Koleva (vocals). We warmly welcome them to Seattle. Да помогнем на децата сираци в България

Скъпи българи и приятели на България,
Може би и вие сте си задавали въпроса как да помогнете на децата сираци, които живеят в окаяни условия в България.

Решихме да организираме набиране на средства, които ще бъдат дарени на организацията „Българско Дете” („Bulgarian Child” – www.bulgarianchild.org) за подпомагане на деца сираци в България. Набирането на средства ще се състои на ежегодното събиране на Българите от Сиатъл на 24-ти май в парка на брега на Lake Sammammish. В парка ще има маса (между 12:30 и 4:30pm), където ще можете  да получите повече информация за тази организация и да оставите своето дарение.

„Bulgarian Child” е неправителствена организация, която предоставя директна хуманитарна помощ на над 40 домове в България от 2000 година. Организацията е изцяло доброволна, няма платени длъжности и дарените средства се използват изцяло за децата или сградите на домовете.

Dear Bulgarians and friends of Bulgaria,
Maybe you have wondered how to help Bulgarian orphans, who live in horrific conditions.

We have decided to organize a fundraiser the proceeds from which will be donated to the non-profit organization “Bulgarian Child”, which helps orphan children in Bulgaria. The fundraiser will take place at the annual all-Bulgarian gathering at Lake Sammammish on May 24^th. There will be an information booth at the park from 12:30 to 4:30pm, where you can learn more about this organization and give your donation.

“Bulgarian Child” is a non-profit organization, which provides humanitarian aid to over 40 orphanages in Bulgaria since the year 2000. All of the other work done for “Bulgarian Child” is done completely by volunteers. There are no paid employees and all donations go directly to the children and their environments.

Some local companies offer donation matching. This way your donation can be doubled. We will have the necessary forms for Microsoft and Starbucks.

You can donate in cash, or a check made out to “Bulgarian Child”. 

The first 15 people to donate $80, or above will receive a gift certificate for one hour massage. Everyone, who donates can participate in a raffle. The prizes for the raffle are 5 gift certificates for massage. All of this is possible, due to the generous donation provided by Ekaterina (Kate) Bryant, Licensed Massage Therapist. Description:
Perfectly suited to the acoustics of Town Hall, "Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares” is a women’s vocal ensemble with a rich history and a rare artistic gift. Their un-amplified voices carry traditional Bulgarian music to a realm beyond the human voice, dissolving the separation between East and West, new and old, popular and classical music. This is a sublime concert experience.

In 1951, the father of Bulgarian concert folk music, Philip Koutev, established the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. His goal was to join the rich heritage of his country's solo folk songs with harmonies and arrangements that highlighted their beautiful timbres and irregular rhythms. One year later, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir was founded.

Then as now, its members are singers from the rural regions of Bulgaria, each an informal apprentice in the folk songs of her home. The ensemble, now under the direction of conductor Dora Hristova, has refined Koutev's original idea into a fine art.

The Choir's imaginatively arranged songs join traditional folk melodies with sophisticated harmonies and compelling rhythms, performed in an exotic six-part vocal style. Repertoire is drawn from arrangements created by Bulgaria's most esteemed composers, among them Mr. Koutev, Krasimir Kyurkchiyski, Nikolai Kaufman and Petar Lyondev.

• Рисунките за конкурса ще се събират в началото на събитието. На гърба на всяка рисунка трябва да има име и възраст на автора. Най-добрите творби ще бъдат наградени след гласуване в което всички участват!

• участниците трябва да са на възраст до 15 години

• всеки може да участва с 1 рисунка

• препоръчителен формат: А4 (letter size)

• рисунките ще бъдат върнати на участниците след събитието

• Гласуването ще се проведе по време на Орфея от присъстващите

Balkan Cabaret will be playing for dancing on Friday 2/15 from 8:30-11:30.
This local band is composed of the fabulous Mary Sherhart on vocals; Joe Finn, violin and clarinet; Michael Lawson, accordion and vocals; Steve Ramsey, guitar, tambura, bugarija and vocals; Rich Thomas, bass and vocals. Don't miss them in a venue that has a much larger dance floor than some of the more intimate club settings where they often play. The charge for this special evening will be only $10 so no excuses about not being able to afford it!

About Yuliyan Yordanov:
A native of Doyrentsi, a village in the Lovech region of north central Bulgaria, Yuliyan Yordanov was raised by his grandparents and learned dancing at a young age. A graduate of the acclaimed Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, he worked professionally as a dance director, choreographer, and Bulgarian folk dance instructor beginning in 1993. He and his students participated in many concerts, celebrations, and international festivals throughout Bulgaria and the rest of Europe; in May 1995 they were selected to appear on Channel One of Bulgarian National Television. In 1997 Yuli was honored with an invitation to attend the traditional annual party for teachers of folklore and culture hosted by the president of Bulgaria.
Since moving to the U.S., Yuli has taught Bulgarian dancing primarily in the Midwest, including:
        Door County Folk Festival in Wisconsin (2003, 2004, 2005)
        Autumn Leaves Festival in Nashville (2005)
        Appleton (Wisconsin) IFD Dance Weekend (2005)
        Balkanske Igre Spring Festival in Chicago (2004, 2005, 2006)
        Susquehanna Festival, Harrisburg, PA (2007)
In Chicago, he leads the dance groups "Nashencheta" and "Mitronija" of Sveta Sophia Bulgarian Orthodox Church. In Milwaukee, he is a choreographer for the " Na Lesa Bulgarian Folk Dance Ensemble ; for two years he served as choreographer of the younger group of "St. Sava Junior Dancers" at the Serbian Cultural Center. He has also choreographed regional Bulgarian dance suites for Ensemble Narodno in Madison. As a musician, Yuli performs (tupan, tambura, vocals) with Malo Selo folk band in Madison. He is energetic and enthusiastic and teaches wonderful dances some of which he learned in his village so don't miss his first Seattle workshops.

About Kalin Kirilov
Kalin was born in Vidin, NW Bulgaria and began singing and playing the accordion at the age of 4. He received his first gold medal as a singer in 1981 at the Koprivshitsa Festival. He studied music in Vidin and Pleven and graduated from the Academy of Music and Dance in Plovdiv in 1998 majoring in Tambura and Music Education. He received a Master s Degree in Folklore in 2003 from the University of Oregon, and has just completed his doctorate studies in Music Theory. Kalin has performed extensively in Bulgaria and abroad, recorded with the Bulgarian National Radio, and toured the U.S. in 2003 and 2005 with the legendary Ivo Papasov and Yuri Yunakov. Besides accordion and tambura he plays several other instruments.

Enjoy gorgeous a cappella singing from the Balkan peninsula and Eastern Europe at Dunava's full-length concert on Saturday June 2, 2007 at 7:30 PM at The Dome, 14724 First Ave NE, Shoreline WA (Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church). Special guests include klapa singers from Dave and the Dalmatians; Zlatne Strune tamburitza orchestra; and drummer Jane Hall. Dunava (Bulgarian for "the Danube") follows in the footsteps of the Bulgarian Women's Choir, with its pure vocal quality and remarkable harmonies. Dunava performs traditional songs that can be centuries old, yet reflect contemporary arrangements with their tension and complexity. This Seattle-based women's vocal ensemble specializes in the a cappella folk music of the Balkans. Founded in 2005, Dunava is made up of singers from diverse musical backgrounds sharing a passion for the rough and beautiful harmonies of Eastern Europe. The repertoire includes songs from the cities and villages of Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Russia and Serbia.

Dina Trageser, founder and director of Dunava, has been singing in choirs since first grade. She went on to play guitar and flute, but singing remains her first love. She has sung in various classical and folk choirs, including the Eugene Concert Choir, Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble, Pacific University Chamber Singers (Oregon), and Seattle Pro Musica. She has been singing Balkan folk music for ten years, and currently she is also a member of Orkestar RTW.

Friday, March 30, Daniela will be teaching at Greenlake VFW Hall, 7220 Woodlawn Avenue NE, Seattle 7:00-9:00pm, $15.00.
Balkan band, Orkestar RTW, will play for a dance party following the workshop, 9:00-midnight, $10.00.
Dance party is FREE for workshop attendees.

Saturday, March 31, Daniela will be teaching at the Cedar Valley Grange in Lynnwood (20526 52nd Avenue West).
Registration is at 12:30pm. Workshop from 1:00-4:30 (with 30 min. intermission).

Daniela Ivanova is an accomplished, professional folk dance teacher and performer. She is also a very gifted choreographer and a researcher of the South Slavic folk dance culture. Daniela graduated from the Institute of Music and Choreography, Sofia and also from the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” with MA degrees in Philosophy, Literature and Cultural Studies. This broad educational background gives her the unique opportunity to combine theory and practice, research, teaching and performance in her very extensive works.

She was a full time teacher in choreography and co-founder of the “Medena Pitka” school ensemble. She was Artistic Director of the "Tropanka” folk dance group (New Bulgarian University), choreographer of the “Zornitza” University students` folk ensemble, and a choreographer of different student ensembles in Bulgaria, Banat and Besarabia. With these ensembles she toured France, Israel, Romania, Malta, Belgium, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Mongolia etc., where her groups received prestigious awards. Daniela has very original dance compositions some of which are still performed by various dance groups in Bulgaria. When she practises with them, she always inspires them to give the best they can for themselves and for the audience. Recently she took up a job as a choreographer with a Vojvodian dance ensemble in Novi Sad, Serbia - the “Chigra” Ensemble.

Her talent as an artist helps Daniela Ivanova to be a very good educator as well. She delivers lectures at many educational establishments: the New Bulgarian University, the National Theatre and Film Academy, the specialised school in choreography, and many other schools. She delivers lectures and dance workshops not only in Bulgaria, but also in Slovenia, Serbia, Turkey, Hungary, Greece, and other European countries.

Daniela has rich experience in conducting field work not only in Bulgaria but in Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia as well. Her field work resulted in hundreds of hours of audio recordings, a large number of photos, field notes and other materials (See Field Work and Research Publications). She uses her fieldwork experience when she teaches her master level students to perform authentic dances from various countries. Her big and diverse repertoire and her charm make her a dream teacher.

Daniela is a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Art Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Science

Традиционен партньор на конкурса е списание „Родна Реч”
Този път предлагаме на младите таланти две теми:
„Какви български празници и обичаи тачите и обичате?”
и „Защо човек трябва да е добър?”

Каним да участват деца и юноши от всички български общности в чужбина.
Всеки участник трябва да избере една от двете предложени теми и да напише върху нея есе, съчинение, стихотворение. Няма жанрови и видови ограничения. Единственото задължително условие на организаторите е писмата с литературните ви изяви да съдържат следната информация за автора:

Както при предишните издания на конкурса отличените автори ще получат награди, а най-добрите творби ще бъдат публикувани в списание "Родна реч".

Уважаеми приятели,
Позволете да споделим с вас някои моменти от натрупания опит в провеждането на конкурса.
Идеалното положение е, темата да се представи на всяко дете индивидуално и след като се проведе беседа с него или след като детето обсъди темата в семеен кръг, да си напише съчинението.
Но практиката подсказва и един друг добър подход – използването на формулата „съчинение в клас”. Преподавателят обявява двете теми по време на учебен час и след това провежда беседа с децата върху темите. Така той си изяснява тяхното възприемане на темата, изслушва първите им мисли и ги напътства как да ги развият в съчинението.
Ако някои деца предпочитат своя форма – примерно стихотворение, това е също добре дошло, защото е негово предпочитание.
Дори да има деца, които да напишат нещо различно от темата, приемаме и техните съчинения, защото това са вълнения на детската душа, които също заслужават внимание.
И така, чакаме творбите на вашите възпитаници.

Earshot Jazz, along with KBCS 91.3FM is proud to present an evening with the acclaimed female choir from Bulgaria, Les Mystère Des Voix Bulgares, Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Town Hall in Seattle. This date marks the first time this incredible choral group has toured the United States in over 12 years.

In 1951, the father of Bulgarian concert folk music, Philip Koutev, established the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic. His goal was to join the rich heritage of his country's solo folk songs with harmonies and arrangements that highlighted their beautiful timbres and irregular rhythms. One year later, the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir was founded.

Then as now, its members are singers from the rural regions of Bulgaria, each an informal apprentice in the folk songs of her home. The ensemble, now under the direction of conductor Dora Hristova, has refined Koutev's original idea into a fine art.

The Choir's imaginatively arranged songs join traditional folk melodies with sophisticated harmonies and compelling rhythms, performed in an exotic six-part vocal style. Repertoire is drawn from arrangements created by Bulgaria's most esteemed composers, among them Mr. Koutev, Krasimir Kyurkchiyski, Nikolai Kaufman and Petar Lyondev.

Trio Slavej (“nightingale”) performs Balkan folk music from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Yugoslavia, and Romania, as well as the music of the Roma (Gypsies) of the region. This music is renowned for its haunting melodies, dense ornamentation, complex rhythms, and original improvisations. The geographical  position of the Balkans in southeastern Europe and hundreds of years of Ottoman Turkish rule have created a wealth of influences from both East and West.

The ensemble plays Balkan village styles on traditional instruments such as gajda (goat-skin bagpipe), tambura (long-necked plucked lute), and various villages flutes, as well contemporary styles such as "wedding music," featuring clarinet, accordion, and keyboard. “Wedding music” received its name because of its ubiquitous presence at life cycle celebrations such as weddings, circumcisions, and baptisms where dancing and music are a requirement. This style emphasizes virtuosic technique, improvisation, rapid tempos, and eclectic musical literacy. A multiplicity of styles, such as jazz and rock, and a multiplicity of sources, such as Turkish and Indian musics, are combined with Balkan rural and urban folk musics.

The Trio’s program weaves a texture of both instrumental and vocal music from contrasting regions of the Balkans performed in the Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Romanian, and Romani (Gypsy) languages. Texts express the experiences of village and urban living and the joys and sorrows of life among Roma. The Romani repertoire highlights the popular dance form "chochek" and songs reflecting the marginalization of Roma from mainstream society. Roma, an ethnic group originally from India, have played a central role in the professional folk music of every country of the Balkans.

The members of Trio Slavej have each have successful solo musical careers. The Trio is available for concerts and dance parties. In addition, ensemble members have a distinguished record of teaching Balkan music both to novices and to advanced performers. The Trio can provide master classes and workshops in Balkan-style accordion, clarinet, gajda, tambura, and singing. Dance workshops can also be arranged. The ensemble also offers educational programs such as lectures, lecture/demonstrations, and pre- and post-concert talks on various aspects of Balkan and Romani music, culture, and history. A demonstration recording and photographs are available.

Performer Biographies
Kalin Kirilov (accordion, tambura, keyboard, ocarina and duduk [flutes], vocals), was born in 1975 in Vidin, Northwestern Bulgaria, and began singing and playing the accordion at the age of four, He received his first Gold Medal in 1981 at the Koprivstica Festival. From the age of six he studied at music schools in Vidin and Pleven, and he graduated from the Academy of Music and Dance in Plovdiv in 1998 with a specialization in tambura and music pedagogy. He has performed and toured with many ensembles, has recorded with Bulgarian National Radio, has done arrangements for folk orchestras and choirs, and was soloist with The Danube Ensemble in Vidin.
Kalin has received numerous awards, including a Silver medal at the Sixth Republican Festival, two Gold Medals at the Seventh Republican Festival, and a Bronze Medal at the Koprivstica Festival in 1986. His solo CD includes traditional music and songs from diverse regions of Bulgaria (and neighboring countries), as well as original compositions in "wedding style", all performed by him on fifteen instruments. In 2003 Kalin toured nationally with the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble with guests Ivo Papazov, Neshko Neshev, and Salif Ali; their CD is currently in production. Recently Kalin earned an MA in Folklore at the University of Oregon is currently a doctoral student in Music Theory.

Mark Levy (clarinet, gaida [bagpipes], frula) has been studying, performing, and teaching Balkan folk music for over 30 years. He is a professor of ethnomusicology at the University of Oregon School of Music, where he teaches courses in world music and directs the UO East European Folk Music Ensemble. He also coordinates the UO School of Music's World Music Series, which includes concerts and lecture-demonstrations for the general public, given by visiting artists from various cultures. In the 1970s Mark created the East European Folklife Center, a non-profit corporation which continues to sponsor annual summer Balkan Music & Dance Workshops in California, Maryland, and Oregon. He has made numerous research trips to Bulgaria and Macedonia, and has performed gajda, clarinet and other wind instruments with the Aman Folk Ensemble, Pitu Guli, The Balkantones, and Slavej.

Carol Silverman (vocals) has been involved with Balkan and Romani music and culture for over twenty years as a researcher, educator, and performer. An award-winning professor of cultural anthropology and folklore at the University of Oregon, she teaches about Balkan culture, ethnographic theory, and human rights issues among Roma. She teaches Balkan singing nationally and was the educational coordinator for the 1999 "Gyspy Caravan" tour. She has performed with Zenska Pesna, Slavej, and Izgrev, and since 1994 she has sung with the Yuri Yunakov Ensemble, with whom she recorded two CD's on Traditional Crossroads, "New Colors in Bulgarian Wedding Music" in 1997 and "Balada" in 1999. With the Yunakov Ensemble she has performed at the Clearwater Festival, WOMAD (Australia), Folk Parks (NYC), and the Telstra Adelaide Festival, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the July 4th Concert at the Washington Monument, the Lowell, Massachusetts Festival, the National Folk Festival in East Lansing, Michigan, the Chicago World Music Festival, and the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, as well as at many universities and clubs. In 1999 she performed throughout North America with the World Music Institute's "Gypsy Caravan," and in 2003 she toured with Ivo Papazov.

"It's time for Radost summer benefit party! We'll have a dance workshop with Petur Iliev, a picnic, and an auction and dance party on Saturday August 7th at Laurelhurst Community Center. This event is our primary way of raising the money to pay for rehearsals, & send people to camps and workshops, etc.
We need help with various tasks - buying wine, storing auction items, data entry, mailing invitations, getting food donations, set-up, clean-up, bartending, etc. and Svetla, our volunteer coordinator can help find the right task for each of us. These volunteer party shifts are often a way for your non-performing partner or parent to participate and help Radost in a meaningful way.
We also need goods and services to auction off. Most of you are talented and creative people, so use your imaginations! Can you offer to teach something, cook an ethnic specialty, knit a scarf...? Businesses also donate to non-profit auctions for the advertising and the tax benefit. We need about $10K worth of items to make $5K.

Several excellent items have been promised already, including:
- A Bulgarian dinner for two by Gergana
- A Bulgarian red folklore tablecloth by Gergana
- A handmade quilt by Karen Fujita
- Dinner for two at Georgia's Greek Restaurant
- A CD of beautiful Ukrainian songs by Olesia and her sister Andriana

The historic reunion of Yuri Yunakov, Neshko Neshev, Ivo Papazov, and Salif Ali will dazzle North American audiences during their Fall 2003 tour, which will make its first stop at the  International Accordion Festival this October. Saxophonist Yuri Yunakov achieved star status in the 1980s in Bulgaria while playing with legendary accordionist Neshko Neshev and clarinetist Papazov. After emmigrating to New York City, Yunakov formed his own band which has toured widely. In Bulgaria, Turkey, and western Europe, Neshev, Papazov, and Ali continued their phenomenal music careers in festival settings.  For the first time in a decade these world-class musicians are reuniting, backed up by old and new colleagues. The Yuri Yunakov Ensemble performs Slavic and Romani (Gypsy ) music from the Balkans. This music is renowned for its haunting melodies, dense ornamentation, complex rhythms, and stunning improvisations.  Accordionist Neshko Neshev has played with his cousin Ivo Papazov (his cousin) for over twenty years in the legendary band Trakija, which he helped found in the 1970s. Neshev began playing accordion at the age of nine and has become a master of the Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian  and Romani repertoires. Ivo Papazov (clarinet) is a living legend in his own country and the superstar of Bulgarian wedding music. Although his music is based on tradition, it is squarely set in the late twentieth century, with its eclectic melodies, dazzling technique and electric amplification. Salif Ali on drums was born in Kurdzhali in 1961 of Turkish Romani ancestry. Kalin Kirilov on keyboard, guitar, and vocals was born in Vidin, Bulgaria in 1976 and is presently a student in at the University of Oregon. Vocalist Carol Silverman has been involved with Balkan and Romani music and culture for over twenty years as a researcher, teacher, performer, and educational activist.

Please mark your calendars for a great summer party! Radost Folk Ensemble welcomes Petur Iliev back to Seattle with a workshop and party on Sunday, July 13. Petur is a wonderful teacher with an expressive and charismatic teaching style. His workshops are always great fun!

The evening will include delicious ethnic food, a performance by Radost of Petur’s choreography, dancing for all to terrific live music by Orkestar RTW, and a special joint appearance of Dave and the Dalmatians with the young men of Pacifica Chamber Singers!

This event is a scholarship benefit party to raise funds to send our young apprentices to folklore camps. Radost will hold a small silent auction at the party. Млади приятели, след успешното провеждане на конкурса през изминалите две години, в който участваха повече от 300 деца и юноши от 14 държави, организаторите обявяват неговото трето издание през 2003 г. Каним да участват деца и юноши от всички български общности по света. Всеки малък художник трябва да изпрати не повече от две рисунки с размери до 35/50 см., като може да се използва всякаква техника: акварел, темперни бои, пастели, графика, флумастер, молив, колаж.

На гърба на всяка рисунка е необходимо да бъдат отбелязани четливо следните данни:

Концерти на Балканарама през Май

Come to the University District Street Fair in Seattle this Saturday, May 17, and hear Balkanarama play a set of uptempo Bulgarian, Serbian and Romany dance songs on the Chevron Stage starting about 4:50 p.m. A great opportunity to kjuchek in the street! The Chevron Stage is at the intersection of NE 47th St. and Brooklyn Ave. NE. All ages, free.

The U District Street Fair typically draws about 50,000 people and offers music, food, shopping and people-watching galore in the blocks surrounding the newly refurbished sections of University Way.

If you need another music fix later this Saturday night, Monsoon Teacup (including four members of Balkanarama) will be playing witty pop songs from a woman's point of view (in English) at Patti Summers Cabaret at First and Pike, next to Left Bank Books in the Market. Also on the bill: members of Rumpus, playing "dark carny" music, and Menagerie of Extravagance, playing twisted lounge and torch songs. Monsoon Teacup starts around 9:45. Adults only, $5 cover.

Also, we expect to see you and several hundred other people at the Center House in Seattle Center for Northwest Folklife's giant Balkan Night dance party on Sunday, May 25, starting at 6:50 PM. This year's lineup of bands includes Balkan Mind Meld, Orkestar RTW, Druzhba, Balladina, the fabulous Trio Slavej and Balkanarama. We're last on the bill, starting at 10:20 p.m. All ages, free (Folklife suggests a $5 donation per day for the entire festival).

We'll open with relatively mellow songs during the dinner hour, so that you can enjoy Porta's superb Greek cuisine. Later, we'll crank things up for a high-energy party, with dancers winding around and maybe on top of the tables. We expect to play past midnight.

We'll be especially honored if our friends in the Bulgarian and Greek communities join us for this celebration, even if they have to leave early for midnight services.

We plan to play several songs we haven't done before, includng "Френската Гимназия" by "Слави Трифонов"; Lule Cocek, a late '90s hit by Macedonian star Goce Arnaudov; "Лидия", a Bulgarian Rom kjucek we learned from Yuri Yunakov; and "Майсторе, Майсторе", a Bulgarian pop song. And of course we'll also play "Едно Ферари с Цвят Червен", "Черно Море" and other favorites.

A note from Mary Sherhart:
This year I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with the Pacifica Children's Choir for the second time. I will never forget the look on the faces of people in Bulgaria when they watched a video of Pacifica singing Bulgarian songs in concert two years ago. There is simply no way to measure the value for the Pacifica children or the pride those Bulgarians felt in seeing their folk music being performed by American children half way around the world.
In this ever more confounding world, programs for children that foster understanding between cultures take on an even more significant meaning. Under the visionary leadership of director Susan Senft, Pacifica continues to do just that, but finding funds to support these programs requires some real creativity these days. The Pacifica board, on which I serve, was brainstorming about different fund raising possibilities and, of course, I immediately suggested a party. Balkan Cabaret enthusiastically offered their services with cries of "PARTEEEEE!" Pacifica parents volunteered to cook for and organize the event and, presto, fun is coming your way! Here is a chance to dance to Balkan Cabaret with your family, encourage the love of Balkan cultures and support Pacifica! Triple jeopardy!

The New Land Choir, directed by Mary Sherhart, will be featured at Town Hall on Saturday, March 22, 8:00pm, in “The World in Seattle,” a series of seven concerts which showcase the finest Seattle-area folk and traditional artists.  The New Land Choir, formed specifically for this concert, is a 55-voice choir that performs traditional and arranged folk songs from Eastern Europe.  It’s members include singers from the many rich and varied cultures of the region – Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia and Bosnia – as well as people who are steeped in its music and culture. 
The concert will begin with Koledari who will ring village bells sent to us from the magical mountain town of Bansko, Bulgaria.  The bells connect our new land with the old country and evoke the spirits of ancestors who sang these songs before us.  The concert will be visually striking, as the choir will be adorned in gorgeous handmade traditional costumes of the region.  This concert will feature songs from Bulgaria, Bosnia and Macedonia.

Songs include:
"Ирино, Ирино" – a traditional harvest song from Garvanovo, a village near Haskovo in the Thracian plain of Bulgaria;
"Бре Петрунко", "Що си Горо", "Стоян Иде от Цариград" – arrangements of Bulgarian folksongs by the renowned Filip Kutev;
"Малай Мома" and "Митро Ле Митро" – Two traditional songs from the beautiful Pirin Mountain region of southwest Bulgaria;
"Полегнала е Тодора" – Most often heard sung by women’s choir, this is an arrangement for mixed choir;
Featured soloist Dragi Spasovski singing traditional Macedonian songs accompanied by David Bilides on kaval;
Featured soloist Amir Arslanagic singing a traditional Bosnian song accompanied by David Bilides on saz;
Emina – Arranged specifically for the New Land Choir by noted Zagreb composer Tomislav Uhlik. 
"Що Ми е Мило" – A long-time favorite, this sprightly Macedonian song will end our concert with joy!

“The World in Seattle” is an outgrowth of Town Hall’s mission as a community cultural center serving Seattle’s multiple and vibrant communities and in celebration of the increasingly cosmopolitan make-up of our area.  The series features seven concerts offering vivid and evocative performances by artists from a wide-range of cultural sources including Balkan, South Indian, Alaskan Tlingit, Samoan, Javanese, Brazilian, Hawaiian, African-American, Turkish and Japanese.  “Lift Every Voice – Celebrating Cultures Through Song,” on March 22, also includes Juan Barco and Conjunto, Tex-Mex song and music; Seattle SeaChordsmen – barbershop harmonies; and traditional songs and dances of Samoa.

Семинар по Български Народни Танци с Петър Илиев
И Празненство с Музика на Живо

На 28 март, петък от 19.00 до 21.00 ч. Петър Илиев ще преподава български народни танци   в залата на VFW на източния бряг на езерото Greenlake. Петър Илиев е роден в село Габра, Софийско и е завършил Българската Национална Академия по Хореография в София. През 1986-1988 е бил солист на ансамбъла “Филип Кутев”.  Петър, който по настоящем преподава танци в Калифорния, е любим  учител на клуба за балкански танци на Greenlake заради неговия професионализъм, енергичност и забавен стил на преподаване.

Petur Iliev, a native of Bulgaria, will teach dances from 7pm to 9pm on Friday, March 28, 2003.  Petur is one of our favorite dance teachers because he is fun, energetic and very knowledgeable.  He was born in the village of Gabra in the Shope region and obtained degrees from the Natl. Choreography Academy of Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Natl. Institute of Choreography both in Sofia. He was the principal dancer for the Kutev ensemble from 1986-88.
There will be live music for the party after the dance class, performed by the popular local Balkan band, Orkestar RTW.  The charge for the workshop and party is $15.  The dance class and the party will be held in the VFW hall at: 7220 Woodlawn Ave. NE, Seattle (corner of NE 72nd & Woodlawn Ave. NE).

Широката душа на Българите най-много личи в песните!

Обичате ли да пеете?

Сформира се хор, дирижиран от Мери Шерхарт, известна и почитана от Бългаското общество в Сиатъл, който ще изпълнява красивата музика на България и други Източно Европейски култури.

Този 50-гласов смемсен хор се организира изключително за да участва в музикалната поредица “Вдигнете Глас” (“Lift Every Voice”) през март 2003, в сградата на  градския съвет (Town Hall) в Сиатъл. Хорът ще пее “Полегнала е Тодора”, песен от Банско, изпълнявана от мъже и песен от Тракия, изпълнявана от жени, а също и други песни от Източна Европа. В хорът ще бъдат включени мъже и жени от Америка, както и от цяла Източна Европа.

Репетициите ще бъдат вечер, веднъж седмично и ще се провеждат в Сиатъл. Започавт през януари и ще продължат до концерта през март.

Няма такса за участие в хора.

Bulgarian Celebration Concert
            Come enjoy a rare chance to see Radost up-close in a local venue. Radost presents the dance and music of Eastern Europe in a concert featuring the folklore of Bulgaria at Bellevue Community College's Carlson Theatre on Sunday, November 17th at 6 o'clock PM. Revel in new works and old favorites performed by the Radost dancers. Musical guests Dave & the Dalmatians, Orkestar RTW, Vardar, and Kosava Women's Choir will add to the celebration. Special dance guests will include our host group at BCC - The Eastside Moving Company -- and the dancers of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
            The doors will open at 4:30pm for a pre-concert reception. Sample a few tasty Bulgarian specialities and enjoy live music. View an exhibit of vintage Bulgarian costumes presented by Krassimira Mateva of Kotty Designs as you catch up with friends before the show.

BULGARI - Bulgarian Folk Ensemble celebrating their 10th anniversary, direct from Bulgaria on their 5th U.S. tour - Presents a Concert and Dance Party

Formed and led by Georgi Doichev, 10 Bulgarian musicians, singers, and dancers will present an evening of Bulgarian folk music and dance. The evening will start with a concert featuring the musicians, vocal soloist and dancers, followed by dancing for everyone to their fabulous music.

BULGARI's program includes wonderful performances with traditional folk instruments, great vocals, and fabulous dancers in wonderful customes-- all representing music and dance from the six regions of Bulgaria.

BULGARI, a group of musicians, singers, and dancers from Bulgaria, offer a beautiful performance full of complex rhythms, intricate ornamentation, and mysterious, throbbing harmonies. The group draws inspiration from a rich and soulful tradition that reflects old-world village life and the blending of cultures in the Balkan Peninsula. All the musicians in Bulgari, including founder Georgi Doichev, who is a premier bagpipe player in Bulgaria, are present or former members of Bulgaria's National Ensemble of Folk Song and Dance and are celebrities in their homeland. The singer, Radostina Kaneva, has been the leading singer from Thrace in Bulgaria for the last six years and is a soloist on Bulgarian National Radio and Television.

След събирането на Езерото Самамиш заповядайте на Балканска Вечер като Част от Фолклорния Фестивал на Северозападните САЩ.
